Preparing Your Top For Quilting

My Studio is pet and smoke-free. Your quilt top is important to me. The better the quilt top is prepared, the better the finished result will be. In order to guarantee the highest quality and satisfaction in the finished product, please consider the following as you prepare your quilt:

  • Quilt batting & backing should both be at least 8" longer & wider than the  top, i.e. if the quilt top is 70" x 50", the backing should be 78" x 58", giving 4" extra per side allowing for any shrinkage during the quilting.

  • Check for any seams that are not properly caught in the 1/4" seam allowance. These could come apart when the top is on the rollers. Be sure that all the seams that come to the edge of the quilt are backstitched. When placed on the frame & rolled taught, edge seams may come loose.  There will be a charge if seams must be secured on my sewing machine prior to quilting.

  • Mark the top and bottom of the quilt clearly if there is a difference.

  • Please make sure your backing is pressed, seams flat, open  and squared up with selvages removed.

  • Quilt top needs to be as square as possible; this includes borders. If there are tucks, or wrinkles in the quilt top or your borders are wavy when you lay it out, these things most often cannot be quilted out. For the secret to perfect borders, click here.

  • Please be sure all stray threads are clipped. You don’t want stray threads showing through your quilt top.

  • Do not baste the backing, batting and top. Bring them as separate pieces. They will be loaded onto the frame separately.

  • When shipping your quilt top, it is a good idea to photograph & insure the package. If it's not photographed & insured, it will be difficult to recover any money should it be lost or damaged in transit. Before mailing, place your quilt top in a plastic bag to prevent possible water damage.

  • Do not list the word quilt on the outside of your shipping container.  I ask that you use the following address format, as I feel this ensures a safer arrival of your special quilt:
